Exploiting the gender diversity impact in the Automotive sector

with a Special Focus on Metrology for Automotive


The event aims to bring into light the impact of gender diversity in the Automotive sector and encourage discussion around how gender-based differences should be taken into account and can be transformed into a value.

During the session, the WIE Commitment Chart "Steering girls to STEM" will be presented. A particular focus will be given to point 8 of the commitment chart: "demonstration of the advantages derived from female presence in working realities", and how it relates to the Automotive Sector. To this aim, the speakers from Industry will bring their views on gender diversity impact in the Automotive sector.

Topics include, but are not limited to:

  • The gender impact on automotive measurements and testing (e.g. on level of comfort and vigilance of the driver and passengers)
  • The gender impact on automotive design
  • Gender-inspired approaches to measurements design in automotive
  • Gender-based different approaches to the interaction with physical and virtual systems;
  • Practical guidelines in gender-aware sensors and system design for automotive (e.g. automatic gender recognition) or testing methodologies;
  • Gender aware design and implementation of laboratory tests

Ilaria De Munari received the Electronic Engineering degree and the Ph.D. degree in information technologies from the University of Parma, Parma, Italy, in 1991 and 1995, respectively. In 1997, she joined the Department of Information Engineering (presently the Department of Engineering and Architecture), of the University of Parma, as a Research Assistant. From 2004 she has been an Associate Professor of electronics. Her past research interests were focused on the reliability of electronic devices and the design of electronic systems. She was involved in several activities related to Human Activity Recognition and Assistive Technologies, managing some national and European projects. Her current research interests include the design of wearable and portable sensors, wireless sensor networks, design of digital systems, FPGAs and hardware implementation of machine learning algorithms and arithmetic circuits. She has authored or co-authored over 100 papers in technical journals or proceedings of international conferences starting from 1993. She is Senior Member IEEE.


Manuela Tufo, obtained the title of PhD in Information Engineering at the University of Sannio presenting a final dissertation entitled: "Innovative Design for an Extended Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control". In 2012 she was the beneficiary of the research project "PON04a3_00058 Smart and Social Move - S2 MOVE", a project co-financed by the PON-REC 2007/2013 as part of the "Social Innovation" projects (D.D. 84/ric. of 2 March 2012). She held the role of researcher at the National Interuniversity Consortium for Computer Science, dealing, within the TABLHEALTH project, with the design of a multi-sensor platform for patient monitoring. In 2016, he was among the co-founders of Koine Srl and since 2020 he has also held the position of Chairman of the Board of Directors and Chief Executive Officer. Since 2017 he has held the role of Director of the R&D area of the company Kineton Srl - of which he is also co-founder, contributing to the creation of new skills and\or innovative products for solving problems encountered in the field with customers and to respond to market needs. The research activities conducted over the years have mainly concerned advanced driver assistance systems, autonomous, connected and cooperative vehicles, and embedded automotive systems.


Roberta Di Pace is associate professor in Transportation Engineering at the Dep. of Civil Eng. of the UNISA. She is member of several boards at the Dep. of Civil Eng. of the UNISA and since 2019 she is also member of the board of on Risk and Sustainability in Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Systems.
She is supervisor and co-supervisor of several BSc and MSc students and also PhD Students. Since 2010 she is a member of the “Sustainable Transport and Mobility” laboratory at the Department of Civil Engineering of the University of Salerno. She has been involved in several research projects at international (COST) and national level (PRIN, POR, Centro nazionale per la mobilità sostenibile – CCAM and smart infrastructures).
She has more than 15 years of experience in research and management with special focus on: intelligent transportation systems; traveller information systems; discrete choice models and paradigms for travel behavior analysis and modelling; paradigms for traveller learning process modelling; traffic management and control; within - day traffic flow modelling; models and algorithms for travel demand assignment to congested transportation networks, smart/sustainable mobility; transportation impacts. She is a board member of IEEE ITSC Italian Chapter and the association of the Italian Society of professors in transportation fields (SIDT). She is a member of the communication team and webmaster of the WIE Affinity Group - Italy Section.


Lisa Tondelli is a PhD student at the department DIEF (Dipartimento di Ingegneria Enzo Ferrari) in Modena. She graduated in 2022 in Electronics Engineering in the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, where she is now pursuing with the PhD. She is now a first-year PhD student, and she is investigating self-heating effects in advanced nanoscale devices in collaboration with an international industrial partner. Besides the research activity, she is co-tutoring thesis activities of master’s degree students.
